MAKE AN IMPACT IN YOUR COMMUNITY
by understanding Hawaii's sustainable culture
01
A Sustainable Culture
Reclaiming a sustainble culture includes the process of retrieving knowledge and insights passed down through generations, particularly from kūpuna, including how one might live attuned to one’s environment; reevaluating the norms, values, and practices in light of the contemporary situation; and transforming them to make them relevant to today.
We will respect, honor, and educate ourselves on Native Hawaiian Culture.
02
an island worldview
The earliest Hawaiian communities brought with them an island worldview that emphasized an intimate and familial connection to the land based on interdependence. This worldview was predicated on understanding the intrinsic power (mana) of all phenomena and the need to protect this mana through the establishment of protective barriers, or kapu. For generations, passed down through myths and legends, as well as proverbial sayings, Hawaiians understood that the life of the community was predicated on the health of the land.
We will respect and uplift the beliefs of the Native Hawaiian People.
03
connection to the land
The Hawaiians developed a subsistence culture and they lived close to the land, developing systems and ways to protect, preserve, and restore the ocean and the land resources.
We will respect, and take care of the land. We will give it back to the Native Hawaiian people.
04
communal interdependence
This sense of community interdependence, particularly through its embodiment in the extended family, or ‘ohana, expressed itself in the primary land divisions of Hawai‘i prior to the arrival of Europeans. Numerous local communities continue to implement culturally relevant practices that foster a growing sense of community interdependence and sustainability. The assertion of the value of the traditional culture, through such things as dance, language, sailing, and political action, has had a profoundly uplifting effect on the Hawaiian people.
We will respect our community and restore Native Hawaiian Traditions.
