Education

Around 2012, Hawaii had become “dangerously dependent” on imported food according to the 2012 Food Sustainability Legislation. Although we would joke about Hawaii only lasting a week if we stopped getting outside foods, it was ultimately true. Many organizations had begun to decrease Hawaii’s dependence on imported food by partnering with the land and empowering community members to take care of one another.

Education is the starting point. Teaching students about crop production and distributing food throughout the community. One method of farming include fertilizing the soil with indigenous micro-organisms or “growing nature by using nature,” instead of using harmful pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. These methods have become widely used in Hawai‘i.

Their Impact

Regenerative and local food systems strengthen cultural heritage and improve the health of the community. Kumu Farms sells all of their products direct-to-consumer and encourage the importance of growing your own foods with out harmful pesticides.
